Skycrete is a proprietary mixture of local clay, plus other cementaceous aggregates in order to produce an all-purpose, economical medium. This post focuses specifically on the artistic potentials for architectural ornament and fine art sculptural purposes using Skycrete.
Carving & Casting
First, an original design must be created. This takes the form of a carving in plaster, wood or stone. Carvings currently range from one inch diameter medallions to one square foot tiles. The original carving is cast in silicone in which Skycrete casts will ultimately be made. Once cast, these low relief tiles can be applied in an architectural setting or find their way into a multiplicity of other artistic applications.

Mixing Skycrete
As with any medium consisting primarily of natural materials, proportions must be refined through experimentation in order to maximize the benefits of each material while minimizing their potential drawbacks. Only a certain percentage of Skyhill clay can be added to the mix to provide its smooth surface potentials before too much added clay can create cracking in the finished casts.
